In a month that happens to have five Wednesdays, this week was always going to be a light week for new comic book releases. Still, that’s no excuse to not make your mid-week run to the local shop: there’s still a treat waiting for you there!
Whether you know them as the Justice League of America, the JLA, Justice League Europe, Justice League International, Justice League Unlimited or Justice League Task Force, these days DC’s greatest grouping of superheroes go by the simple yet effective: Justice League.
DC Comics rebooted their entire roster of comic book characters last August, calling it the “New 52” – named for the fifty-two brand new monthly titles beginning publication at that time. Justice League, the company’s flagship title, contained all the major superstar characters: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash and Aquaman among others, and was the first release of the bunch.
Writer Geoff Johns and artist Jim Lee, both industry superstars themselves, set the first storyline in the recent past: two years before the time that the rest of the rebooted DC Universe takes place in. That allowed for a plot whereby the previously mentioned heroes actually meet each other for the first time – the origin of the Justice League itself – a fairly compelling beginning to the entire publishing reboot! And now, after hiding in the shadows for five monthly issues, the big bad from this ongoing prologue, has come home to roost.
If you’re a follower of DC Comics, a big bad doesn’t get any bigger – or any badder – than the iron-fisted ruler of the crag-ridden planet called Apokolips: Darkseid. This issue is going to be crazy intense!
Plus, the word on the street is that you’ll get a sneak peek of a major new character that will have repercussions in DC’s upcoming first post reboot, company-wide crossover, event. The mysterious Pandora, who first appeared in the Flashpoint mini-series last summer (the series that gave explanation to DC’s reboot), will get some page and panel time in Justice League #6 – and we may very well get some answers as to her appearances and her doings in the new DC Universe!
So make the run this Wednesday and pick up the final issue of the first story-arc in DC’s flagship superhero book. Because justice will rain down on evil – and you’ll get to see it happen for the first time in the New 52!
Every Wednesday, JP makes the after-work run to his local downtown comic book shop. Comics arrive on Wednesdays you see and JP, fearful that the latest issue will sell out, rushes out to purchase his copy. This regular, weekly column will highlight a particularly interesting release, written in short order, of course, because JP has to get his – before someone else does!
