You know when you’ve got your hands on an addictive game when you’re trying to write a review on it, but every time that you look at it on your phone, you just HAVE to play one more level. That’s how I felt while reviewing Bike Baron.
If you’ve ever played Trials HD on the Xbox360 then you know what this is all about. The two games are strikingly similar. The fact that Baron plays like Trials AND is portable is a winning combination. It’s addictive and challenging, and I literally lost about 35 minutes on the subway playing this game without realizing it!
The controls are extremely simple. The left and right buttons tilt you forward and backward, and the two buttons on the right side are for acceleration or reverse. The goal is to navigate the courses without crashing. You also need to collect coins and hit a time limit in order to unlock stars. You use these stars to unlock new levels. There are loop the loops, bombs and even pumpkins to dodge, and even the smallest error in timing will send you flying into a wall or exploding into the sky.
The first few levels are are pretty easy, they’re there to help get you into the groove. But don’t let it fool you, this game gets HARD. Level after level, the difficulty increases, sometimes making the levels so maddeningly difficult that you find yourself playing the same level over and over as you try t0 make it over one jump that has you stuck or to grab a coin that is just out of reach. It’s absolutely infuriating to miss the time limit by 2 tenths of a second 7-8 times in a row, and it happens a lot!
Once you finally beat a level that has stumped you for a while, you then have to try and get three stars on that level – and other every level – so that you can open up the secret stage at the end of each act. And trust me there’s always that one level that you simple CAN’T get all three stars on, no matter how hard you try.
If you’re a creative person, there is even a ‘create-a-level option in this game as well where you can create and share a custom level of your own, or play a downloaded level created by someone else. It’s actually a pretty robust creation system for a mobile game.
Bottom line: If you’re looking for a game that is extremely challenging and addictive then this is the game for you. If you’re a commuter, I can personally guarantee that this will make your ride a whole lot faster!
