The Muppets Flounder, Vampires Hold Steady – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Wrap-Up Report, Weekend of December 2nd, 2011

Apologies that I’m a day late with our box office wrap-up report. Yesterday was our Biff Bam Pot Luck with the writers from the site, so I spent the day preparing and then dealing with a splitting (not alchohol induced) migraine once the festivities were over. So this will be a quick one. I’m sure you’ll understand.

Sadly, the weekend didn’t go particularly well for The Muppets. I had predicted the film would bring in $18 million to take the number one spot. It didn’t even come close. The Muppets wound up with just $11 million to hold at number two. While the film has already made back its budget, I don’t think it has become the hit everyone was hoping for.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 held onto the number one spot for the third weekend in a row, bringing in nearly $17 million, which is right in line with what I predicted. The total gross for the film now stands at $247 million.

Martin Scorsese’s Hugo finished in third place, as predicted, but only brought in $7.6 million, as opposed to the $11 million I thought it would do, thanks to the strong reviews it’s been receiving. Arthur Christmas was close behing with $7.3 million, two million less than I had it doing, while Happy Feet 2 rounded out the top five with $6 million, about a million less than I had predicted.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) The Muppets – $18 million
2) The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 – $17.5 million
3) Hugo – $11 million
4) Arthur Christmas – $9 million
5) Happy Feet 2 – $7 million

And here’s how the weekend turned out:

1) The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 – $16.9 million
2) The Muppets– $11 million
3) Hugo – $7.6 million
4) Arthur Christmas – $7.3 million
5) Happy Feet 2 – $6 million

The coming weekend sees the release of the ensemble comedy New Years Eve. Will it be able to take down Breaking Dawn Part 1? Check back on Friday to see our predicitons!
