The Muppets Try To Claim Number One – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions – Weekend of December 2nd, 2011

No major new releases in theatres this weekend, which means The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 and The Muppets are going to once again duke it out in hopes of landing at the top of the box office. So the question is – which will come out on top? Here’s our predictions:

Hype means nothing if a studio delivers a poor film. The good news, according to critics and fans alike, The Muppets has delivered on all of its buzz, and then some. It’s safe to say that Kermit and the gang are back, and it’s not out of the realm of possibility that they could very well claim the top spot this weekend. As a family film that’s less cerebral than Hugo and less festive than Arthur Christmas, I’m predicting kids and parents will show up in strong numbers once again. Look for The Muppets to land at number one with $18 million.

That doesn’t mean The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 is out of the running. In fact, this could be one of the closest weekends we’ve seen all year. Twi-hards have already made this one yet another box office hit, but you know there are those fans out there who are going to go every weekend, just to see those magic moments between Bella and Edward on the big screen while they can. Look for Breaking Dawn Part 1 to bring in $17.5 million this weekend to just miss the top spot.

The rest of the top five will be claimed by various family friendly flicks. Adding more theatres to its count this weekend and with stellar word of mouth going for it, Hugo should move past Arthur Christmas to score the third spot with $11 million, while the later film will have to settle for fourth place with $9 million. Finishing things off at number five will be Happy Feet 2 with $7 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) The Muppets – $18 million
2) The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 – $17.5 million
3) Hugo – $11 million
4) Arthur Christmas – $9 million
5) Happy Feet 2 – $7 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
