When it comes to classic rock, the music keeps getting older but the fans keep getting younger and younger. With that logic, it makes complete sense that one of the biggest bands in the history of popular music has remastered and repacked their entire catalogue in a collection that’s perfect for both older fans and younger ones who might be inclined to ask “Which one’s Pink?”
Over the past few months EMI has unleashed the Why Pink Floyd? campaign – multiple Immersion box sets, a greatest hits collection and the Discovery box set. You can check out more details on the Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here Immersion sets here and here. While both those are great purchases for the obsessive Pink Floyd fans (like yours truly), the 14 disc Discovery box set makes our Holiday Gift Guide because it has virtually everything a casual or new Floyd fan could want.
Contained in the Pink Floyd Discovery box set set is every single Floyd studio album, from their debut release The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, to their final album, The Division Bell. Along the way you get masterpieces such as Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall, to less popular releases like the More soundtrack and The Final Cut. Each album is remastered and packaged with booklets containing album lyrics and new photos. The box set also contains an exclusive 60 page art book by longtime Pink Floyd associate Storm Thorgerson that’s gorgeous to flip through.
There have been other Pink Floyd box sets in the past (1992’s Shine On, 2007’s Oh, By The Way), but both of of those weren’t perfect and essential the way that the Discovery box set is. While you can purchase all 14 Pink Floyd studio albums separately if you want to, for price point and packaging, the Pink Floyd Discovery box set is the absolute way to go. The music or Floyd fan in your life will definitely love you for putting this one under the tree of Hanukkah bush this year.
