Every Wednesday, JP makes the after-work run to his local downtown comic book shop. Comics arrive on Wednesdays you see and JP, fearful that the latest issue will sell out, rushes out to purchase his copy. This regular, weekly column will highlight a particularly interesting release, written in short order, of course, because JP has to get his – before someone else does!
X-Men: With Great Power
Writer: Victor Gischler and various
Artist: Chris Bachalo and various
This weekend sees the film release of X-Men: First Class, directed by Matthew Vaughan and starring an ensemble cast of young actors playing your favourite mutant super heroes. X-Men: First Class is a period piece, taking place in the early 1960’s – the same time period that the X-Men comic book first appeared on American newsstand shelves – and focuses on the relationship between Professor X and Magneto.
I’m a sucker for ensemble casts and have always had an affinity for period pieces. Still, although I wasn’t much enthused by the direction of this film a year or so ago, I must say that the ideas represented in it and the scenes I’ve watched thus far, have grown on me over the last few months and I’m actually looking forward to checking it out at theatres.
That said, this is the week of X-Men here at Biff Bam Pop! and with the plethora of “X” related titles published by Marvel Comics on a weekly basis, make your Wednesday run this week and pick up the small (I say “small” because it’s going to be reprinted in hardcover in a little over a months time) and inexpensive collection of X-Men: With Great Power. Not only does the book have the fantastic Chris Bachelo on art duty but it also has the X-Men adventuring in New York City and teaming up with everybody’s favourite wall-crawler, Spider-Man!
Sweet mutant ensemble! You can’t go wrong, teasing in a viewing of X-Men: First Class like this!
