The Wednesday Run – June 8, 2011
Every Wednesday, JP makes the after-work run to his local downtown comic book shop. Comics arrive on Wednesdays you see and JP, fearful that the latest issue will sell out, rushes out to purchase his copy. This regular, weekly column will highlight a particularly interesting release, written in short order, of course, because JP has to get his – before someone else does!
American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest
Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: Sean Murphy
Vampires? Vampire hunters? Nazi’s? Secret organizations? All amidst a World War II backdrop? Hell ya, you gotta be there!
Scott Snyder is one of the most exciting comic book writers out there right now. His current work on Detective Comics, which tells the story of Dick Grayson wearing the cape and cowl and adventuring in Gotham City’s underbelly of crime, is some of the best character-driven fiction I’ve read in a long time. But it’s his creator-owned work on the monthly Vertigo Comics series, American Vampire, that first put Snyder firmly on the “best-of” list. And now that title, like sharp, insidious fangs, has grown larger than anyone had ever imagined.
American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest is a 5-issue spin-off mini series that tells the tale of Felicia Book and Cash McCogan, vampire hunters searching through war-torn Europe for a rumoured cure to the vampirism affliction.
Fresh off Joe the Barbarian and Hellblazer: City of Demons, acclaimed artist Sean Murphy joins Synder on the series. Yep. He knows the levels of fear that an undead monster dressed in hated military garb can illicit. Moreover, he’s an electrifying, detailed draftsman with a penchant for fervent action and brooding moodiness!
Whether you read the monthly American Vampire or not, make the run this Wednesday and pick up American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest.
I know that you’ll be thirsting for more!
