DVD Tuesday with Scotty G

True Grit – This is a remake of the classic film by the Coen Brothers. Jeff Bridges plays the iconic John Wayne role, while Matt Damon and Josh Brolin co-star in the film. The plot follows a young girl who hires Rooster Cogburn (played by Jeff Bridges) to track down the killer of her father. The film was a critical and commercial hit at the box office during the Christmas season and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards (it did not win any). This is the highest profile title of the week.

Just Go With It – The plot surrounds Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston playing co-workers who have to act like they are about to become a divorced couple, so Sandler can be with his new girlfriend. Like most Sandler films, the critics hated it, but it did very well at the box office, grossing over $100 million.

Green Lantern: Emerald Knights – Capitalizing on the upcoming release of the live-action film Green Lantern, this animated Direct-To-DVD film is an anthology film that focuses on different characters of the Green Lantern Corps that include such fan favorites as Sinestro and Kilowog. For Green Lantern fans only.

Sanctum – This film is produced by James Cameron and follows a group of adventurers who get stuck in a cave during a storm and have to try and make their way out before the caves fill with water. The DVD continues the marketing trend that the film had in theatres as it is being marketed as if it were a James Cameron film, because there is no star power in it (I doubt most people know who Richard Roxburgh and Ioan Gruffudd are, although I’m sure they recognize their faces from the films they’ve been in). It was in and out of theatres fairly quickly, but fans of Cameron will want to check it out.

American: The Bill Hicks Story – This critically acclaimed documentary focuses on the life of comedian Bill Hicks, who was one of the most acclaimed comics in the 1980’s and early 1990’s. The film features interviews with friends and family of Bill Hicks and shows the tremendous career he had in his short life as he died when he was only 32 years old of pancreatic cancer. For any fans of stand-up comedy, this documentary is worth checking out.

Blue Crush 2 – This Direct-To-DVD sequel features none of the original stars and focuses on a young girl, who goes to surf in Jeffreys Bay in South Africa to fulfill a dream of her dead mother. For fans of the first film only.
