This week’s instalment of What’s Going On runs the full spectrum, R&B vets still doing their thing, rap heavyweights, and a new wave of rock bands kicking the door open. Let’s get into what’s worth your time. As always, if you dig what you hear, be sure to stream and follow these artists.
Basht. – Irish rockers Basht. are about to become your favourite new band with “Perfume,” a slow-building and brooding single that signals big things ahead of their debut album, Poor Advice. The Dublin outfit has mastered the art of rage and release, with deep verses giving way to anthemic, cathartic hooks. If you haven’t checked them out yet, now’s the time. This feels like the start of something serious.

Atta Boy – Los Angeles-based band Atta Boy return with “Oh, Mama,” a sunny, horn-kissed single that sets the tone for upcoming album Silt. Fronted by Eden Brolin (daughter of Josh Brolin), alongside Dashel Thompson, Freddy Reish, and Lewis Pullman (son of Bill Pullman), the band blends indie rock with a surprising amount of world-weary, lived-in emotion. They could easily trade on star power, but Atta Boy continues carving out their own quietly compelling lane. Look for their album Silt to drop on June 26.

Mýa – R&B veteran Mýa is serving up a nostalgic groove on “Just A Little Bit,” a flirtatious, synth-soaked bop that leans deep into late-’80s funk. Featuring Bay Area rap legend Too $hort, the track is dripping in cool confidence. It’s cool for the summer! Mýa is gearing up for the release of her latest album, Retrospect, proving she’s still refining a sound that feels both classic and completely her own.

BL3SS – As the weather hopefully starts to warm up, BL3SS is making us long for the summer with “terms and conditions,” a bright, fizzing dance cut that flips UK R&B star Mahalia’s 2023 track into something built for the dance floor. All bounce and euphoria, it’s the kind of track that moves effortlessly from house parties to festival fields. Lightweight in the best way without being disposable. More of this, please.

Toosii – Toosii is taking a victory lap on “Proud of Me,” a melodic, self-reflective anthem that turns struggle into motivation. Built on his signature blend of big hooks and vulnerable storytelling, the track feels like a self-high five. With cinematic scope and a confidence that comes with having gone through the highs and lows of life, Toosii proves once again that his strength lies in making ambition feel deeply human.
