What’s Going On: Story Of The Year, Elmiene, Bif Naked, Bowling For Soup, New Constellations

This week’s instalment of What’s Going On is a little chaotic, a little all over the place, and honestly, that’s the way I like it. We’ve got rock, we’ve got soul, and a fun cover that you definitely did not see coming. As always, if you dig what you hear, be sure to stream and follow these artists.

Story Of The Year – If you’re looking for something loud, Story Of The Year has got you covered. The rockers from St. Louis, Missouri, are back with “Disconnected,” a bruising, vulnerable gut-punch that finds the post-hardcore veterans staring down burnout, isolation, and the exhausting work of trying to heal. Built on big cathartic screams, massive riffs, and drums that hit like panic attacks, the track is classic SOTY. The track is the latest preview of what listeners can expect from the band’s eighth album A.R.S.O.N., set to drop February 13th.

Elmiene – Rising British-Sudanese soul singer Elmiene is starting the year off with a bang! First comes the announcement of his debut album sounds for someone, due out March 27. Plus, the release of his quietly devastating new single “Reclusive.” Produced by Jeff “Gitty” Gitelman, the track is a masterclass in restraint and emotional precision. Across the upcoming record, Elmiene reflects on family, absence, and growth, sharpening his already unmistakable voice into something even more personal and powerful. Have your tissues on standby.

Bif Naked – Fresh off a run of sold-out documentary screenings across Canada, rock goddess Bif Naked is back with “Snowblinded,” a fierce new single from her 2025 album Champion that feels as urgent as ever. Equal parts anthem and a wake-up call, the track channels Bif’s trademark raw honesty into a pointed call-out of what’s going on in society. It’s a reminder that decades into her career, the Canadian rock legend remains loud, fearless, and deeply plugged into the moment. Tap into this one!

Bowling For Soup – File this one under unexpected covers! Pop-punk veterans Bowling For Soup are keeping the party rolling with their own unique take on Elastica’s Brit-pop classic “Connection.” The cover also sees them teaming up with electro-pop duo able machines. The result is buzzy, playful, and impossible not to love. Paired with a retro-futurist video shot at iconic LA locations, it’s a reminder that Bowling For Soup still thrives on joy, jokes, and turning nostalgia into something loudly, gloriously fun.

New Constellations – Portland indie-pop duo New Constellations return with “I Disappear,” an anxiety-hazed new single that arrives alongside the announcement of their long-awaited debut album, It Comes In Waves, out May 15 via Nettwerk. Dancing on the line between shimmery dream-pop and raw emotional confession, the track captures the spiral of self-doubt with disarming honesty. Three years in the making, the pair’s upcoming album tackles grief, joy, collapse, and renewal, all while cementing New Constellations as masters of soft-focus catharsis.
