Here’s a question to consider – if the zombie apocalypse were to rain down upon us finally, would you be prepared? I don’t mean in an “I’ve been hoarding food and drink” way; I mean more in a “oh look, it’s a zombie, hit it in the head” sort of way. I want to think I would be ready to defend myself, in no small part because I’ve seen enough movies and played enough video games that I’d have more than an inclination as to what I’d be dealing with.
One of my favourite end-of-days, survival horror games of the last decade has been Days Gone. Initially released for the PlayStation 4 back in 2019, the game has you playing as Deacon St. John, a biker who is surviving in a world overrun by “Freakers,” working with various camps and searching for the truth about whether his long-thought-dead wife may still be alive.
While Days Gone looked and played great when it first arrived, like so many excellent titles, the game was recently remastered for the PlayStation 5. The highlights of the new iteration include:
3D Audio: Immerse yourself in the treacherous Farewell Wilderness like never before with full Tempest 3D audio support.
Ultra high-speed SSD: Jump on your Drifter bike and get back in the action with reduced loading times. Pick up where you left off on Days Gone for PS4® with PlayStation®4 console save data transferable to your PlayStation 5 console.
Breathtaking Visuals: Days Gone Remastered is brought to new life by the PlayStation®5 console, featuring improved graphical fidelity, increased foliage draw distance, improved shadow and lighting quality, VRR support, and more.
Adaptive Triggers: Experience the distinct feel and resistance of various weapons from Deacon’s arsenal while fighting your way through hordes of Freakers.
Haptic Feedback: Ride across the Broken Road and feel the rumble of your bike’s engine or the wheels gripping the dirt roads in the palm of your hands – as you fully immerse yourself in this desolate world.
All of the above are excellent additions to Days Gone Remastered; you genuinely feel more immersed in Deacon’s world, especially as you ride your motorcycle through the gorgeously rendered landscape.
Days Gone Remastered also includes a trio of new modes for hardcore gamers, including Speedrun Mode, Permadeath Mode, and Enhanced Photo Mode. Those are nice-to-haves, certainly, but they probably have less mass appeal.
Instead, I’d suggest Days Gone Remastered is for those who love a good story and who didn’t have a chance to experience the title in its original iteration. The aspects of the game that were good (its story, voice acting, and gameplay) are still there, but have improved dramatically in some ways. There’s no doubt about the power of the PS5, and Days Gone Remastered is the now-definitive way to play a recent classic.
And get ready for the day we’re overrun by zombies.
