Exclusive Interview: Steve Howe on ‘Guitarscape’ & 50 Years of Yes’ ‘Relayer’

At 77 years old, and with his standing as one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time firmly intact, you’d think that Steve Howe would slow down. That’s just not the case. Along with multiple tours with Yes in 2024, including a highly regarded stop in Toronto in July, Howe also released Guitarscape, his latest solo album and first on his own HoweSound label. Much of the album was inspired after the guitarist purchased a Novation Summit keyboard, and started experimenting with his own keyboard structures. The result is an album that sounds entirely unique within Howe’s solo canon.

2024 also marked the 50th anniversary of Relayer, the seventh studio album from Yes, and the only one to feature Patrick Moraz on keyboards. The album, which features another Yes epic in the form of “Gates of Delirium” was recently reissued by Rhino Records on Rhino High Fidelity vinyl, limited and numbered to just 5000 copies.

I recently had the chance to talk to Steve Howe about Guitarscape, his memories of making Relayer, Yes’ recent tour with Deep Purple and much more.
