Gilbert Speaks on ‘Twisters’

Humans have technically evolved enough to land on the moon, and send rockets to Mars, but we are helpless when it comes to Mother Nature. Like the Angel of Death, Mother Nature is not only unstoppable, but merciless…but hey! We’ve gotten some great films about her destructive force, especially when it comes to twisters.

Twisters

Let me start off by saying that I saw Twisters in a movie theatre. Disaster films should always be watched in a theatre. Secondly, Twisters is not a sequel to Twister…although it does pay homage to the original film.  Thirdly, Twisters is sort of based on a true story in that each of the six major tornadoes used by visual effects supervisor, Ben Snow, are based on real-life tornados.

Twisters was directed by Lee Isaac Chung and stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, and Sasha Lane. The film’s hero is Kate Carter (Daisy Edgar-Jones) who works with NOAA in New York. Five years earlier, Kate lost three friends doing research on tornadoes, so even though she is the expert twister whisperer, she gave up on field research.

Twisters offers the expected love story that is tossed in the mix between Kate and Cowboy Tornado wrangler, sexy guy, Tyler (Glen Powell) and the rivalry between Kate’s friend, Javi (Anthony Ramos), and Tyler. But this film is about a monster, a real monster. Mother Nature doesn’t have an agenda. Her anger destroys towns, cities, and states with the power of an atomic bomb. She is unpredictable. Her only purpose is to destroy, and we are giving her more power with global warming. Our lifestyle is making the weather more dangerous. Yep, we all love our cars…even if it means dealing with severe droughts, flooding, back-to-back hurricanes, and tornadoes.

What was different between Twister and Twisters is that we get to feel the actual loss of human lives and property. There are developers out there making money on this loss. Trust me, they are willing to fund the science to build new property at higher prices.

It’s one thing to see the property damage on the news, but let’s walk in the survivors’ shoes. Imagine standing in the shambles of your destroyed house. Yes, the insurance companies might help you rebuild, but a house has a soul, and it holds precious memories. The scene that hit me the hardest was watching a woman searching for family photos, right after the tornado ripped her house from its foundation.

Conclusion

I wasn’t expecting to like Twisters as much as I did. It was definitely a fun film…with a difference. This time around, we were shown the true power of a twister, and that humbles you. We were also shown how ordinary people work behind the scenes, using science to study tornadoes while working on a better warning system for those living in a twister’s path.

I recommend Twisters as a great summer hit. Treat yourself to a movie at a neighborhood theatre.
