Figure Friday: E.A Henson Kicks off 2024 with Boss Fight Studio’s Grim Spectre Skeleton

New year, new Figure Friday!

If you’re reading this I sincerely hope you made it though December relatively unscathed. I had some most welcome time away from my day job but familial obligations kept me busy for the last couple weeks of the year. However, I did still find time to record a 2023 Figure Friday year in review with my FF writing partner Josh Wallen. If you haven’t listened yet what are you even doing with your life?

As for what 2024 holds…it’s anyone’s guess at this point. We’re not even a full week into the year so just take it easy. Personally, I continued my tradition of resolving to make no new year’s resolutions. I’m pretty locked in right now so there’s no changing me.

However…I did decide to try something new for this column.

Boss Fight Studio EPIC H.A.C.K.S. Grim Spectre Skeleton

In lieu of penning another piece about Star Wars, Transformers, or even TMNT (and also likely worn down by Josh’s constant onslaught of bitchin’ acquisitions from smaller toy companies) I elected to dip my toe into Boss Fight Studio’s pool.

Earlier this year I saw an unboxing video on YouTube from the EPIC H.A.C.K.S. line of skeletons, I thought they looked really cool and the seed was planted. A few months later at Power Con I got a chance to see some of the figures up close and made another mental note about them. Then in the quiet hours of a late December evening I knew that the missing piece in my life was a hyper articulated teal Grim Reaper figure.

I’m not going to string you along, I absolutely adore the Grim Spectre figure because it’s just fun. I was really struck by how refreshing it was to get a collectible that’s not tied to a larger licensed property owned by one of three mega corporations. Sometimes a cool skeleton figure can just be a cool skeleton figure and that’s enough.

Here’s what’s in the box:

  • Grim Spectre Skeleton figure
  • Robe
  • Belt
  • Magic book
  • Flame
  • Scythe
  • Alternate Jack O’ Lantern head
  • 2 Pairs of alternate hands
  • Stand

As with any new acquisition there’s a bit of an exploratory period one it’s been unboxed. With collector focused pieces like these figures I’m always afraid I’ll snap a peg off when trying to switch out one of the interchangeable hands so I’m extra careful with them.

I was impressed with how posable the figure was for being JUST a skeleton, not like it needs to pull of any dynamic poses or anything but it’s decidedly not a plastic brick. The sculpting on the figure is top notch and there’s an amazing amount of detail for a 1/12 scale figure. I’m just saying, any skeleton figure with an articulated jaw is an easy 10 out of 10 for me.

The figure comes with a lot of great accessories and it’s hard to pick just one. I’m currently torn between the Jack O’ Lantern head and the “pointing” hand. I can’t wait to put this figure on my shelf and have him beckon to other figures. The only way this figure could be better would be if it glowed in the dark.

So at the beginning of 2024 I have taken my first step into a larger world of collecting by taking a chance of something. This better not…you know the rest
