In the Game: ‘Grand Theft Auto VI’ is Real!

As I am writing this, it has been 3,731 days since the release of Grand Theft Auto V. Not only is it among the highest selling games of all time, but it is also critically acclaimed and loved by so many. Fans have been dying for the inevitable follow-up. With every passing year without an announcement, GTAVI felt more and more like a pipe dream. That was until earlier this year when a major leak not only proved the existence of GTAVI, but it also showed an in depth look at some developer stuff we were not supposed to see. This is obviously a really shitty thing to have happened, but it at least gave gamers a sigh of relief knowing GTAVI was in fact real. Last week Rockstar Games announced they’d be showing us the first trailer for the game on December 5th, 2023 at 9:00AM EST. However, yesterday, December 4th 2023, the GTAVI trailer leaked onto Twitter. Rockstar, having been battered by leaks already this year decided to one-up the leak and release the trailer officially – and my god – it’s glorious.

Grand Theft Auto VI has been confirmed to take place in the iconic Miami inspired ‘Vice City.’ We are introduced to Lucia, the first female protagonist for the series (if you don’t count 1 or 2, because who does?) While the trailer doesn’t mention the male protagonist featured in the key-art, we can assume he’s playable. The trailer makes it appear that this will be a Bonnie and Clyde style adventure and I personally think that will be a blast. I LOVE how GTA explores family and friendship dynamics. Getting to hang out with your cousin in GTAIV and seeing Michael, Trevor, and Franklin grow closer in GTAV was really special to me. I cannot wait to see how the relationship dynamic fleshes itself out in GTAVI.

In the footage we see a ton of social media presence, which leads me to believe that we will likely be able to meet these insane characters we’re shown. Maybe things we do in the game will be filmed by passersby and posted online for the world to see. I’m super curious to see how Rockstar implements this feature and whether or not we will actually be able to interact with other real world players through this feature. Hell, I don’t even know if it IS a feature, I’m just speculating. We are also shown ridiculously crowded beaches, highways, streets and strip clubs. Characters are extremely detailed and the world is about as photo realistic as it gets. The world itself also looks massive. We have no clue how it will compare to GTAV, but given the size of that game and 10 years of wait time, I think it’s safe to say it’ll be bigger than we are expecting.

I was hoping so desperately that we’d be able to get our hands on this game next year, but we unfortunately have to wait until the year 2025 to play this game. There is no confirmed date as of yet, but we all felt a sting of sadness seeing that year pop up. Rockstar doesn’t slip up, it’s not in their DNA, so I know the wait will be more than worth it. Given how much support GTAV has received a decade after its release, I think it’s safe to say that GTAVI will be around for many, many years into the 2030s, even. Maybe I’m thinking too far ahead, but that is how excited the trailer got me! It seems like it’s also got 78 million others excited, based on the YouTube trailer views.

Grand Theft Auto VI is real, and it launches in 2025.
