Gilbert Speaks on ‘Blood Red Sky’

I don’t know about you, but flying on a plane has many drawbacks, starting with going through security, trying to squeeze into seats designed for toddlers, and breathing in the disgusting circulated air. But the scariest thing on my mind when flying…is hijackers. Netflix’s Blood Red Sky tells the tale of what happens when hijackers meet a protective mother with a dark secret. Buckle up people. This is one hell of a bumpy ride.

Blood Red Sky also known as Transatlantic 473 is a 2021 horror/action film which is directed by Peter Thorwarth and stars the fabulous Peri Baumeister, Kais Setti, Carl Anton Koch, Alexander Scheer, Dominic Purcell, and Graham McTavish. The flight takes off with no hitches and is making its way to America. One of the passengers is a German Widow who must constantly inject herself with medication because of a rare blood disorder.

Nadja (Peri Baumeister) and her young son, Elias (Carl Anton Koch) hope that American doctors can find a cure for her disorder, but she looks so weak, that we are doubtful she will survive the flight. Elias for his young age, is not only very capable of taking care of his sickly mother, but he is also very intelligent. Elias strikes up a friendship with Farid (Kais Setti), a physicist who is scheduled to attend a conference in America.

Once the passengers are all settled in for the night flight, that is when the action begins and never stops. Before the passengers even recognize what is happening, a group of terrorists, which includes the co-pilot, Bastian (Kal Ivo Baulitz) and steward Robert (Alexander Scheer), kill the pilot and three air marshals. These terrorists are swift and brutal, but Robert is a true sociopath who fatally shoots Nadja as she is coming out of the bathroom. Luckily for Elias, Farid takes the boy under his wing.

The terrorist force Farid to make a video saying that he is an Islamic terrorist. They want a ransom, but they have no intention of allowing any of the passengers to live. The terrorists are confident that they are in control of the situation, but they soon learn that a mother’s love is a force to be reckoned with.

Conclusion with Spoiler

Nadja, who is bleeding profusely, manages to crawl to a compartment that leads to the luggage holding area. There are several dogs in crates. Nadja quickly feeds on a small dog to regain her strength. Yep! It seems that Nadja is a vampire. Through flashbacks we learn that her husband was killed after their car broke down and he was forced to find help at a farmhouse. When Nadja goes searching for her husband, she is attacked by the same vampire who killed her husband.

The shots Nadja was injecting was to keep her from craving blood, but with her son in danger, Nadja must now go full Dracula to save Elias and the other passengers. Other than the foreign version of Let the Right One In, Blood Red Sky is one of the best vampire films that I’ve seen in a long time.

I highly recommend that you watch Blood Red Sky. The action never stops, but in between all the blood, fighting, and trying to safely land the plane, we are left with a message: even monsters love their children, and will do whatever it takes to protect their babies.

Blood Red Sky is on Netflix.
