In this week’s instalment of What’s Going On, the heavy-hitters are out! I’ve got the latest from living legends Duran Duran and Canadian pop superstar The Weeknd. Plus the newest releases from rising stars John Holiday, Chris Grey, and Jenevieve. As always, if you like what you hear, be sure to stream and follow the artists.
The Weeknd – After dominating 2020 with his album After Hours and more specifically the single “Blinding Lights”, The Weeknd is kicking off his new era with the single “Take My Breath.” The broody Scarborough-raised singer teased the release with a series of cryptic social media posts and shared a snippet of the song during NBC’s Olympics coverage. If you’ve been a fan of The Weeknd for a while, “Take My Breath” is somewhat reminiscent of his past work with Kavisnky but with more of a disco feel. Will “Take My Breath” and the accompanying forthcoming album replicate the same chart dominance The Weeknd experienced in 2020? Time will tell but I’d bet on it.

Duran Duran – Their single “Invisible” sent Duranies around the world into a frenzy and now Duran Duran is back with new song “MORE JOY!”, the next taste of what’s to come from their forthcoming album FUTURE PAST. The upbeat track feels like a modern take on the classic Duran Duran sound with an added dose of whimsy thanks to the presence of Japanese all-girl punk band CHAI. On how the collaboration with CHAI came about, Simon LeBon says: “Nick suggested some girlish voices on ‘MORE JOY!’ and I knew exactly where to find them – CHAI, post-modern, all-girl Japanese punk band, whose energy and pure sense of fun might actually blow your ears off!”

John Holiday – Countertenor John Holiday is ready to tackle mainstream crossover pop world with his new single “Alive in Me.” Fresh off being a finalist on Season 19 of The Voice, the time is right for the classical vocalist to make a run at the pop market. “Alive in Me” is produced by Rob Grimaldi and acts as a beautiful showcase for Holiday’s stunning vocal delivery that is sure to wow listeners. Speaking on the importance of the song to him as a Black gay man, John Holiday says: “When I began to discover songs for this project, I wanted to find something that was representative of me. ‘Alive in Me’ is a story about knowing that if there is love for others, then, certainly, love is also there for me.”

Jenevieve – Florida-born singer-songwriter Jenevieve is hard at work on her debut album, but in the meantime, she’s gracing listeners with her new single “Résumé.” All about navigating through heartbreak, “Résumé” is an easy listen with its cool synths and sardonic lyrics. The colourful carefree music video shot with a fish-eye lens gives everything a very 1990s feel. You’ll be able to hear a whole lot more from Jenevieve when her debut album Division drops on September 3 and you can catch her at the Day N Vegas festival this November.

Chris Grey – Toronto’s very own Chris Grey is out now with his new single “I Should Be Happy.” The talented young singer-songwriter effortlessly blends different genres and sounds on this emotional slow-burner. Mixing pop, R&B and hip-hop elements into a style that’s all his own, it’s only a matter of time until the multi-talented artist blows up. On what “I Should Be Happy” is about, Chris Grey says: ““I Should Be Happy” is about the internal struggle of feeling guilty for not feeling good, even when things are going well. I was just starting to see someone and everything was going well but for some reason, I just didn’t feel as good as I thought I should.”
