Neil Marshall has had a few ups and downs in the last few years. The prolific writer-director of Dog Soldiers, Doomsday, and The Descent put some outstanding episodes of TV under his belt, including episodes of Lost In Space, Westworld, and perhaps the most memorable episode of Game of Thrones, Season 2’s “Battle of Blackwater”. Marshall also had a couple of misses with 2019’s Hellboy, and a very public scandal involving his girlfriend Charlotte Kirk. In an odd turn of events, Marshall and Kirk worked together on his new plague-themed horror film, The Reckoning.
Marshall and Kirk co-wrote the film, which takes place in 1600’s England during the Great Plague, and Kirk stars as a woman accused of being a witch and placed in the care of a notorious witch-hunter named Judge Moorcroft (Sean Pertwee). I’m still not quite sold on Kirk’s acting chops, and she doesn’t get a lot to do here, but I’ll withhold judgement for the finished product. Until then, check out the new trailer!
RLJE Films will release the film theatrically and on paid-VOD on February 5, 2021 ahead of a premiere on Shudder.
