It was a bit of a surprise at the box office this weekend, as the expected number one had to settle for second place. Joke’s on that movie, I guess?
Joker was in the top spot this weekend, bringing in an estimated $18.9 million and raising its total to $277.5 million in North America. It should cross the $300 million mark in the next two weeks, an amazing showing.
As for the rest of the top five, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil had to settle for second place with $18.5 million. The movie is far behind the 2014 original in terms of dollars in North America. The Addams Family was in third place with $11.7 million, with Zombieland 2: Double Tap right behind it in fourth place with $11.6 million. Horror film Countdown hand to settle for a fifth place debut with $9 million.
It’s worth mentioning that The Lighthouse, the new film by Robert Eggers managed to make it into the top ten with $3 million and only 586 screens showing it. The psychological horror movie starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe pulls from the same tense cinema that Eggers delivered with The VVitch, although with a few more laughs to make it just a little less oppressive. Both actors do outstanding work, and composer Mark Korven’s score is as dissonantly compelling as The VVitch. For horror fans, it’s worth seeing The Lighthouse in theatres to get its full effect.
