This week, The Leftscape is excited to present an interview with activist, writer, and speaker Robyn Ochs! Robyn Ochs is known worldwide for her work on LGBTQ issues with a focus on bisexual+ identities. She is the editor of Bi Women Quarterly; the forthcoming issue will begin the 38th year of publication. She has also edited two anthologies: the 42-country collection Getting Bi: Voices of Bisexuals Around the World (with co-editor Sarah Rowley) and RECOGNIZE: The Voices of Bisexual Men (with co-editor H. Sharif Williams). In this first part of a two-part conversation with Robin Renée marking September’s bi awareness celebrations, Robyn talks about the history of bi visibility, breaks down her frequently quoted definition of bisexuality, and encourages those of nonbinary sexualities to communicate and work together. Pansexual, bisexual, omnisexual, queer, curious, or just want to learn more? Give this a listen.
Earlier in the show, Robin, Wendy Sheridan, and Mary McGinley chat about recent news: The appearance of illnesses related to vaping, potential cancellation of U.S. Republican primary elections, Hurricane Dorian survivors kicked off a ferry, and some ways to help in the aftermath of the hurricane such as the HeadKnowles GoFundMe effort and Homestead Bahamas Hurricane Relief. After the interview, the co-hosts reflect on the Pagan celebration of Mabon and the practice of contemplating balance at the time of the Autumn Equinox.
Leftscape episodes always begin with sharing some reasons to celebrate. Here are a few: Bisexual Awareness Week (September 16 – 23), National Dance Day (September 21), Elephant Appreciation Day, American Business Women’s Day, and Hobbit Day (September 22), Mabon and Celebrate Bisexuality Day/Bi Visibility Day (September 23rd), National Voter Registration Day and National Punctuation Day (September 24). Birthday shout outs for this week go out to Jada Pinkett Smith, Jimmy Fallon, Adam West, George RR Martin, Stephen King, Bill Murray, Joan Jett, Ani DiFranco, Bruce Springsteen, and Jim Henson.
Stay tuned next week for a new show and part two of the Robin and Robyn chat!
