Three New Movies Vie for the Top Spot at the Box Office

It’s going to be an interesting weekend at the box office, as three new films are facing off for the top spot. Will it be Happy Death Day 2U, Alita: Battle Angel, or Isn’t It Romantic as the new number, or will The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part hold on for a second weekend?

Happy Death Day 2U is the sequel to October 2017’s surprise horror hit from Blumhouse. A Groundhog Day-esque romp, this time out the stakes are raised when more characters lives are raised. Happy Death Day 2U currently is sitting at 66% at Rotten Tomatoes, a strong showing for a franchise horror film, and there’s an excellent chance that the film could grab the top spot this weekend. Look for a first place showing with $26 million.

Alita: Battle Angel is a live action manga adaptation from director Robert Rodriguez and producer James Cameron. The film has been in the works for years and brings with it the pedigree of the two creative names. However, manga adaptations have been a hard sell over the years, and I don’t anticipate that changing here. Look for a third place debut for Alita: Battle Angel with $19 million.

Finally, Isn’t It Romantic is a new rom-com featuring Rebel Wilson and Liam Hemsworth. If the film would have dropped last weekend, it would have hit the pre-Valentine’s weekend. While it was in theatres for the big day, I don’t see it having real legs. Look for it in fourth place with $12 million.

As for the rest of the top five, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part will be in second place with $22 million, while What Men Want will close out the top five with $10 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Happy Death Day 2U – $26 million
2) The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part – $22 million
3) Alita: Battle Angel – $19 million
4) Isn’t It Romantic – $12 million
5) What Men Want – $10 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
