Ah! The comic book winter special!
What fills a holiday stocking better than an over-sized, full colour periodical, full of mysterious séances, dastardly demons, undead blood suckers…and the gang of do-gooders that seek to defeat evil in all its incarnations?
Hellboy, and the characters that come with him, is legendary. It’s the Mike Mignola creation that solidified the writer/artist as one of the comic book industry’s all-time greats. His penchant for dark and fantastical tales, steeped in real human history, mixed with an almost abstract visual artistic design, made the leap from an indie corner of the comic book universe to global pop culture mythos.
The character has already birthed two budget films in Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), with a third, a reboot aptly titled Hellboy, on the way next month.
Not bad!
But he, and other characters form his universe, have also been seen in cartoons, novels, and video games. Truly, that’s rarefied air.
