‘Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again’ Should Sing Its Way to the Top of the Box Office

Mamma Mia! Three new movies out this weekend? Three of them are sequels? That just seems excessive, doesn’t it? Regardless, one of them will top the box office this weekend.

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is the sequel to the 2008 musical starring Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep, featuringthe songs of Abba. The movie was a huge hit, which makes a sequel logical. Along with the original cast, this new film brings Cher into the mix, and she’s been all over the media promoting it, even announcing her new album of Abba cover songs. Abba’s popularity has never diminished, and Here We Go Again is solid counter-programming against all the big summer blockbusters that have been in theaters. Look for a first place debut with a strong $42 million.

Also out this weekend is The Equalizer 2, the follow-up to the reasonably successful 2014 film starring Denzel Washington. Though the actor brings with him a decent following, this is another action film in a crowded season. Look for a third place debut with $25 million.

The final sequel in theaters is Unfriended: Dark Web, but buzz has been fairly low, and its likely that the film will debut outside the top five.

As for the rest of the top five, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation will fall to second place with $26 million. Ant-Man and The Wasp will be in fourth place with $16 million, while Incredibles 2 will close things out in fifth with $14 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Mama Mia; Here We Go Again – $42 million
2) Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation – $26 million
3) The Equalizer 2 – $25 million
4) Ant-Man and The Wasp – $16 million
5) Incredibles 2 – $14 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
