Can Zootopia and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Dethrone Deadpool?

Hey folks, Glenn Walker here, editor-in-chief Andy Burns who usually does the weekly Box Office Predictions, is out of town, so I will be giving this a shot. Remember, folks, I’m not a gambler, or a psychic, and kids, don’t try this at home. Box office predictin’ is dangerous business.

This weekend brings Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Zootopia, and London Has Fallen, as well as The Other Side of the Door into theaters. Can Deadpool hold on to its lead for a third weekend in a row? Let’s see what my guesses are, after the jump.

I’m a Disney guy. I do a Disney podcast with my wife as proof, so I’m pretty excited about this weekend’s release of Zootopia. From the creators of Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph, and Big Hero 6, this police procedural in a city of anthropomorphic animals looks like fun and will surely pull in a percentage of the family dollar.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, starring Tina Fey and based on the memoir by journalist Kim Barker, The Taliban Shuffle, despite being at its core a war story, looks to be a lot of fun. That might sound odd, but this comedy set in war-torn Afghanistan and Pakistan also stars Margot Robbie, Martin Freeman, Alfred Molina, and Billy Bob Thornton. Is it too soon? It might be time.

Also in the mix for this weekend is the sequel to Olympus Has Fallen, called London Has Fallen fueled by political testosterone with Gerald Butler, Aaron Eckhart, and Morgan Freeman. There are lots of explosions and butt kicking for the folks who like their Deadpool a bit more serious. And then there’s the British-Indian horror entry The Other Side of the Door with Jeremy Sisto that may pull some numbers as well.

Of course, speaking of the merc with a mouth, Deadpool has ruled the box office for more than a couple weeks now, against all odds, especially with that R rating. I guess it must be good, I wouldn’t know, haven’t seen it yet. Not a fan. Still, hundreds of thousands are, so the money should continue to come in. Will it Deadpool dethroned this week? I’m going to say no, but it’s going to be close.

Here are the Biff Bam Pop! predictions:

1) Deadpool – $31 million
2) Zootopia – $30 million
3) Whiskey Tango Foxtrot – $26 million
4) London Has Fallen – $15 million
5) Gods of Egypt – $11 million

Hmmm… Be back here on Sunday to see how it all works out!
