The Scorch Trials vs Black Mass at the box office this weekend

After a few very slow weeks at the box office, things are looking to heat up this weekend with the release of two high profile films. But, as we all know (I should hope, anyway), only one can be on top. Which will it be? Here’s our prediction:

scorch

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is the sequel to last year’s so-so successful film, The Maze Runner, which made a little over $100 million when it was released. Not bad, but certainly not Hunger Games numbers, to be sure. For a neophyte like me, though, the trailers have looked pretty good and enticing, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see filmgoers who didn’t flock to the first one be willing to give this outing a shot. Look for a first place showing for The Scorch Trials with $37 million.

Also opening this weekend is Black Mass with Johnny Depp. It’s a true life crime film that’s been getting strong reviews since its debut earlier this week at the Toronto International Film Festival, including one from our own Luke Sneyd. Few would argue that Johnny Depp is desperately in need of a hit (let’s not mention the OneLay RangerLay, ok), and it’s looking as though Black Mass could be the movie to get him back into the good graces of audiences and critics alike. Look for a second place showing with $35 million.

As for the rest of the top five, The Visit should grab third place with $12 million. The Perfect Guy will be right behind it in fourth place with $11.5 million, while War Room will close things out in fifth place with $5 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials – $37 million
2) Black Mass – $35 million
3) The Visit – $12 million
4) The Perfect Guy – $11.5 million
5) War Room – $5 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
