It’s a crowded weekend at the box office, with new releases out on Friday battling with a few released early in the week. Which will come out on top? Here’s our prediction:
Elysium is a sci-fi film from director Neil Blomkamp, staring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. Blomkamp hit a home run with his last film, District 9, and Damon is a reliable action star, but this film feels way to similar to Tom Cruise’s Oblivion, released earlier this year. With theatres crowd with large scale films, Elysium may run into some trouble this weekend. Look for a first place showing, but with a less than stellar $35 million.
Find out how the rest of the weekend will turn out after the jump!
Planes is the latest film from Disney and features…well, planes. Easy marketing, to be sure. Since both The Smurfs 2 and Turbo underperformed, there’s an excellent chance families could flock to see this new film. I’m making a bit of a surprise prediction that Planes will hit second place with $30 million. I could be wrong, but hey, let’s see what happens.
Released earlier this week is We’re The Millers, staring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis in one of the last comedy releases of the summer (does anyone even remember The Hangover 3?). The film has already been doing well, and should manage to bring in audiences looking for a laugh. Look for a third place showing with $23 million.
Was anybody asking for a sequel to the moderate hit that was Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief? I know I wasn’t, since I could could barely sit through the first film. However, this weekend sees the release of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. Pre-teens and teenagers may check this one out, and that’s aboout it. Look for a fourth place showing with $20 million.
Meanwhile, look for last week’s number one film, 2 Guns, to drop to fifth place with $15 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Elysium – $35 million
2) Planes – $30 million
3) We’re The Millers – $23 million
4) Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters – $20 million
5) 2 Guns – $15 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
