Snikt! That’s the sound of this weekend’s big new release looking to carve a place on top of the box office. Can it get it done? Here’s our prediction.
Let’s be honest – nobody liked X-Men Origins: Wolverine when it was out a few years ago. A bad script, bad fights, lacklustre effects. The only thing the film had going for it was Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of the title character, which he owns. The good news is, The Wolverine is looking to make up for those sins with a new director, James Mangold, and a script based off of the classic Frank Miller/Chris Claremont Japan storyline that made Wolverine a comic icon. There’s a lot of goodwill towards Jackman and, even with changes to the story, fans are eager to see this tale come to life. Look for a first place showing for The Wolverine with $80 million.
Find out how the rest of the weekend will turn out after the jump!
As for the rest of the top five, look for last week’s big winner, The Conjuring, to drop to second with $21 million. Despicable Me 2 will grab third with $14 million, with Turbo right behind with $12 million in fourth. Closing things out in fifth will be Grown Ups 2 with $10 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) The Wolverine – $80 million
2) The Conjuring – $21 million
3) Despicable Me 2 – $14 million
4) Turbo – $12 million
5) Grown Ups 2 – $10 million
