Okay, editor-in-chief Andy Burns usually does the weekly Box Office Predictions, but seeing as he’s out in San Diego enjoying himself at Comic-Con, I will be giving this a shot. Remember, folks, I’m not a gambler, or a psychic, and kids, don’t try this at home. Box office predictin’ is dangerous business.
This weekend brings The Conjuring, Red 2, and R.I.P.D. into theaters. Can Despicable Me 2 hold on to its lead for a third weekend in a row? Let’s see what my guesses are, after the jump.
The Conjuring has got that special horror movie vibe that is preserved for only a handful of flicks, stuff like Paranormal Activity, Amityville Horror, and yeah, The Exorcist. It’s supposedly true, and it’s going to scare the pants off ya.
Red 2 and R.I.P.D. are both based on obscure comic books. Now ordinarily I would say it’s a plus being a comic book movie, but I guess that only works if the audience actually knows it’s based on a comic book. I don’t think many folks outside the genre know these two are. And while R.I.P.D. looks like fun, I have heard many people say that it looks like a lot like Men in Black. Then again, that could be a plus as well. Speaking of comic books, there’s also the CGI animated Turbo, featuring Ryan Reynolds as a snail who thinks he’s the Flash.
Of course it’s been a battlefield at the box office the last few weeks with Despicable Me 2 on top, and Pacific Rim (my fave of the summer) and Adam Sandler’s Grown Ups 2 fighting for scraps in third and second place. Will they hold on against new contenders?
Here are the Biff Bam Pop! predictions:
1) The Conjuring – $34 million
2) Despicable Me 2 – $23 million
3) Red 2 – $19.5 million
4) Turbo – $19 million
5) Grown Ups 2 – $18 million
Hmmm… that doesn’t bode well for Pacific Rim, or R.I.P.D. Be back here on Sunday to see how it all works out!
