It’s another summer weekend, which means two more big films looking for your money at the box office. One’s for laughs, the other has a concept that’s a little too familiar. Will either come out on top? Here’s our prediction:
The Heat is a female buddy cop film starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. With both actors comedic pedigree, and McCarthy’s current track record at the box office, this one should do well (certainly better than The Internship). However, while the film won’t be able to hit the number one spot. Look for a third place showing with $35 million.
How will the rest of the weekend turn out? Find out after the jump!
Also opening this weekend is White House Down with Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum, directed by master of disaster films, Roland Emmerich. The concept – terrorist gut the White House. The President and some sort of law enforcement officer work to take ’em down. Sound familiar? Sure it does – it’s a similar concept to Olympus Has Fallen, released earlier this year to much success. I don’t think the sameness will stop audiences from checking this one out mind – after all, it has the one and only Channing Tatum blowing stuff up. Look for White House Down to grab second place with $40 million.
As for the rest of the top five, Monsters University will hold on to first place with $45 million. The fantastic World War Z will hit fourth place with $30 million, while Man of Steel will close things out in fifth with $23 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Monsters University – $45 million
2) White House Down – $40 million
3) The Heat – $35 million
4) World War Z – $30 million
5) Man of Steel – $23 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
