Just when you thought a weekend would go by without a new movie from The Rock we get…well, a new movie from The Rock! Will he be able to knock Tom Cruise from the top of the heap? Here’s our prediction.
Pain & Gain is the true story of a gang of murderous bodybuilders, staring Dwayne The Rock Johnson, Mark Wahlberg and Anthony Mackie and directed by Michael Bay. Believe it or not, this is a Bay film I’d actually like to see, and one that I think a lot of audiences will be interested. A mix of black humour and action, there’s lots of buzz surrounding Pain & Gain, which should mean strong numbers for the weekend. Look for The Rock to be back on top of the box office (following G.I. Joe: Retaliation) with a $45 million opening weekend.
Find out how the rest of the top five will turn out after the jump!
The Big Wedding features an ensemble cast that includes Robin Williams, Diane Keaton, Robert DeNiro, Susan Sarandon and Katherine Heigl. All talented actors, but ones that aren’t really box office draws anymore. These sorts of films can be crap shoots, and one is never to certain how they’ll perform. Look for a fourth place finish with $9 million.
As for the rest of the top five, Oblivion will fall to second place with $20 million, 42 will hit third with $11 million while The Croods will close things out $8 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Pain & Gain – $45 million
2) Oblivion – $20 million
3) 42 – $11 million
4) The Big Wedding – $9 million
5) The Croods – $8 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out.
