Red Dawn? More Like Red Don’t

Some things should left alone. LIke 80’s films. Just let them be, studios. And that’s exactly what happened when MGM put their remake Red Dawn on the shelf back in 2009 while they dealt with financial hardships.

On the shelf is where it should have stayed. Watch then trailer below and then find out why after the jump.

Red DawnIn the 80’s version of Red Dawn, Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen and Lea Thompson deal with a Russian invasion of the U.S. A group of high school students in Calumet, Colorado become a resistance, taking on the name of Wolverines after their school mascot. In the new version, the Russians are replaced with the North Koreans and Colorado becomes Washington, and the stars include a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth, a pre-Hunger Games Josh Hutcherson and a no-talent Josh Peck.

Honestly, this is a horrible, horrible film. I will admit that I haven’t seen the original, so I don’t know if that one is much better, but I’ve got to believe it is. I’ve got to. Because if it wasn’t, then what you have here is one of thee most pointless remakes in the history of films.

You know what? There’s no caveat. This is a pointless and awful film that really doesn’t do anything for anyone in it. Luckily Hemsworth managed to get some great roles before this dud wound up released, because who knows how he would have been viewed anyway. Same for Hutcherson. What’s wrong with it? A bad script. A total lack of plausibility. And some very horrible acting, especially from Josh Peck, who makes Red Dawn virtually unwatchable when he’s on screen.

Maybe I should go back and check out the original. But there’s no way you should check out the remake. I took one for the team.

You’re welcome.

  1. Good review Andy. This movie was very, very bad and made me appreciate the original so much more. And even that’s not saying anything really.
