This weekend has two new releases looking for the top five, both of which have a good chance of making waves thanks to their star power. Here’s what you have to look forward to:
Identity Thief stars Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy, both of whom have a solid fan base and who can carry an R-rated comedy with ease. Coming off Bridesmaids, McCarthy should definitely be a draw, and with the complete bomb that was Movie 43, audiences will probably be happy to find a adult comedy that isn’t total tripe. Plus, the trailer is slow burn funny! Look for a first place showing with $23 million.
Find out how the rest of the top five could turn out after the jump!
The second new release of the weekend is Side Effects, directed by Steven Soderbergh and staring Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum and Jude Law, who stars as a psychiatrist who deals with the repercussions of prescribing a patient (Mara) medication. Apart from Tatum, who is becoming a big movie star, nobody in this film can really open a film. However, the trailers have been solid and Soderbergh is a trusted director, so the film could still find an audience. Look for a third place debut with $10 million.
As for the rest of the top five, last week’s number one, Warm Bodies, will drop to second place with $12 million. Silver Linings Playbook will grab fourth place with $8 million, while Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters will close things out in fifth with $6 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Identity Thief – $23 million
2) Warm Bodies – $12 million
3) Side Effects – $10 million
4) Silver Linings Playbook – $8 million
5) Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters – $6 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
Loved Warm Bodies and my daughter and grandsons told me that Hensel and Gretel was good, but I’ll need to check this out for myself
