Mama Vs Schwarzenegger – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

He said he’d be back, and now he is. The question remains, does anybody care that Arnold Schwarzenegger is staring in a new action flick? Here’s our prediction:

Last_Stand_2013The Last Stand finds an aging Schwarzenegger in the role of a small town sheriff taking on Mexican drug cartels. Yes, this is his new flick! Clearly Ahnold isn’t pushing any boundaries in his foray into leading man territory in a decade. Because of that fact, I don’t think you’re going to see a big rush to check out The Last Stand (plus that title just brings up far too many negative memories for fanboys, right?). Of course, I could be wrong, but my gut is telling me that this was the exact wrong sort of film to bring Arnold back to the masses – I’d rather see him in some sort of sci-fi extravaganza, wouldn’t you? I’ll put my prediction where my mouth is and say that The Last Stand will manage third place with $15 million.

Find out how the rest of the weekend will turn out after the jump!
Broken_City_PosterBroken City stars Mark Wahlberg as a private detective hired by the mayor of New York City (Russel Crowe) to investigate the mayor’s wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones). Directed by Hughes Brother Allen, on his own for the first time, Broken City has a solid cast going for it, but buzz is virtually non-existant. I don’t think the film will manage to find any sort of large audience this weekend; instead, it will have to settle for fourth place with $12 million.

Mama_2012_posterMama is a horror film about missing two young sisters who are found by their uncle and aunt, the latter played by the red hot Jessica Chastain. The girls are brought back to their families home, but it looks as though something has come with them. With Chastain and Guillermo Del Toro’s name in the credits, this one should bring in horror fans who just recently were satiated by Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D. Look for Mama to grab $20 million and first place.

As for the rest of the top five, Zero Dark Thirty will drop to second with $18 million, while Gangster Squad should hit fifth place with $9 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Mama – $20 million
2) Zero Dark Thirty – $18 million
3)  The Last Stand – $15 million
4) Broken City – $12 million
5) Gangster Squad – $9 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!

  1. I’m still waiting for Del Toro to do a movie about the vampire book he wrote called the Strain. It was scary

    1. Marie, I think The Strain is getting made as a tv series later this year, here in Toronto!

      1. JP, that is awesome. I want to do a review of the book and I was hoping that Del Toro would have written a sequel to The Strain because it was so good. Will the T.V. series be shown in the states too?

    2. The show will definitely be seen in the States – it’s just the production that would be done around these parts. He’s planning on making his next film, Crimson Peak, here too. He just finished filming much of Mama (released this weekend) here. Apparently Del Toro loves the city!

Also, there are 2 – count ’em – 2 sequels to The Strain trilogy already out! I haven’t read the series myself, but look for The Fall (Book 2) and The Night Eternal (Book 3). Amazon’s got ’em!

      1. You are an angel. I’m going to Barnes and Nobel and buy the two books right now. Thank you JP

  2. I don’t see Mama making $20M, I can imagine The Last Stand making more than you think, I know a lot of friends who are around my age that is 20ish who want to see that, it might surprise you. We’ll soon see but if I am right you would not believe how smug I will be haha 😀

    1. I can’t wait to see how this turns out!
