As many Vita fans already know, August 28th marks the day that PS1 classics come to the Vita, and it’s kind of a big deal. I’ve been waiting for it for a while, because it’s going to allow me to play some of my old favourites on the go…actually, mainly because it’s going to give me a reason to charge my Vita and take it with me for a change.
That aside, I figured I’d put together a quick list of the top 5 PS1 classics to get for your PS Vita, along with their trailers. Anticipating these games again, it’s like being back in the past!
5. Metal Gear Solid
The very first Metal Gear Solid was one of the first really good stealth based game. Made by Konami, it blended everything that we love about stealth games. You could sneak and cover behind objects, you could throw items to make noise and distract enemies, you could even use the awesome cardboard box disguise. Give it a shot if you want to try one of the pioneers of stealth-based fun.
4. Final Fantasy VIII (8)
A lot of people will argue with me when I say that this is my favourite Final Fantasy game. I LOVE FFVII as well, but I started into the series with this game. I was so enveloped by the story at the end that I was actually upset when the game was over. I just wanted to continue playing in this world and see what happened to all the characters. If you’re a fan of RPG’s you MUST get this game and play it.
3. Tomb Raider
Lara Croft, our often ridiculously well endowed heroine, became a gaming sensation and a Playstation staple after the release of this game in 1996. It was a great 3rd person adventure game, spanning some of the world’s finest and most exhilarating locations. You jump, grab, swing, shoot and stealth your way through one adventure after another. This game spawned a franchise that would eventually include games, comics, books, movies and even theme park rides. See where it all began with this game.
2. Resident Evil 2
One of the best entries in the series, it’s a game that will (with a nice set of ear buds – noise cancelling preferably) keep you on the edge of your seat. Keep in mind, the graphics are going to show their age in these games, so don’t be expecting any resolution upgrades. The core game however is one of the best of its kind, one that introduced gamers to the zombie killing genre. Definitely get this one.
1. Final Fantasy VII (7)
Hailed by critics and fans alike as not only the best RPG of all time, but one of the best GAMES of all time, FF7 is a fantastic game that everyone should play at least once. It’s long, but rewarding. There are moments in this game that will make you laugh, moments that will make you cry and everything in between. The story is fantastic and the characters are memorable and likeable. The game is sprawling and open, and you can immerse yourself in it for 50+ hours easily. A great game to have on your portable device, but really, a great game to have period.
So on August 28th, go out and get yourself some awesome old-school gaming goodness! Let us know what you buy!
Not a bad list at all, but I have to throw a bone to Final Fantasy IX. Being my favorite of the PS1 FFs, I’d be more than willing to pay to get that game on the go.
I think Sony would be making a mistake if they didn’t make a significant portion of their PS1 library available on the Vita. They could do something really special with downloadable classics if they released everyone’s favorite games once again.
