Will Audiences Run To See 21 Jump Street? Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions, Weekend of March 16th, 2012

It’s going to be an interesting weekend at the box office – not because we’re getting a whole bunch of new releases. Instead, there’s only one biggie that hits theatres. Will it knock The Lorax from the top spot? And where will John Carter wind up in its second weekend out? Here are our prediction:

Opening this weekend is 21 Jump Street, the remake of the sort-of classic teen cop show that first aired on FOX in the late 80’s and introduced the world to Johnny Depp (and Richard Greico, it must be noted). While the original was a drama, this big screen incarnation of 21 Jump Street is being played for laughs, staring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. Trailers have been entertaining and both Hill and Tatum are coming off solid scores at the box office with Moneyball and The Vow, respectively. Meanwhile, so far reviews have been strong for the film. However, like The A-Team and Dukes of Hazard before it, I’m not sure if nostalgia is going to turn into big dollar signs for this 80’s retread. With all of these factors, look for 21 Jump Street to open in second place with $25 million.

As for the rest of the top five, I’m predicting that Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax is going to continue it’s stellar box office run this weekend by claiming top spot for the third week in a row with a gross of $30 million. The underachieving John Carter will drop to third place, but decent word of mouth could give it a gross of around $20 million. There’s no way this film will be deemed a success, regardless, but while other pundits are calling a steeper fall, I’m going out on a limb with my prediction. Project X will wind up in fourth spot with $6 million while Act of Valor will round out the top five with $4 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax – $30 million
2) 21 Jump Street – $25 million
3) John Carter – $20 million
4) Projext X – $6 million
5) Act of Valor – $4 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
