It’s a huge weekend at the box office, with a few big time sequels aiming for your hard earned dollars. The question is, who will come out on top – Hollywood’s beloved new A-star or a trio of pintsized singing sensations. Believe me when I say that this weekend’s predictions are far from elementary. So let’s see how we think the box office will shape out.
Sherlock Homes: A Game of Shadows is the sequel to the 2009 film staring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and Rachel McAdams. It had a fantastic run in theatres, grossing $209 million. Expectations have been high for this next chapter which introduces the character of Moriarty, played by Jared Harris. Expect a stellar showing for opening weekend, with a $55 million gross.
Alvin and The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked is the third offering in the surprisingly succesful series – amazingly, both films grossed over $200 million in 2007 and 2009, respectively. However, there’s been a glut of family films over the last few weeks so there is a question mark on just how well Chipwrecked will perform. I’m predicting a second place showing with a solid but unspectcular $27 million.
Opening this week in limited release is Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, staring Tom Cruise and Jeremy Renner. The film will only be featured in IMAX theatres for its first week, but that won’t stop it from doing great business, especially because of the 6 minute Dark Knight Rises prologue playing in front of it. Look for an impressive $10 million gross and third place showing.
As for the rest of the top 5, NewYear’s Eve should take a tumble to fourth place and bring in $8 million, while The Muppets will wrap things up with $5.3 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows – $55 million
2) Alvin and the Chipmunks – $27 million
3) Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocols – $10 million
4) New Year’s Eve – $8 million
5) The Muppets – $5.3 million
