Trailer Time: Thor

While the trailer’s been out for a few weeks now, I thought it would be worthwhile dropping a few lines on the upcoming Marvel Studios film Thor, due this summer. Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the story of the Asgardian God will star Chris Hemsworth as the title character, Anthony Hopkins as his father Odin and Natalie Portman as love interest Jane Foster. The film will tie into the Marvel world already established in both Iron Man films and the 2008 Incredible Hulk reboot and, along with the July release of Captain America: The First Avenger, help set the stage for 2012 Avengers team-up film.

The big difference between Thor and the other films is that it will be the first to incorporate a supernatural/mystical element into the Marvel world, one that until this point has been based on realistic technology and science. A lot of fans and bloggers (not to mention Iron Man director Jon Favreau) are unsure of how those two worlds will meld and it’s clear from the trailer below that the filmmakers wanted to address that concern immediately.
As for the rest of the trailer, parts of which were leaked back in the summer during the San Diego Comic-Con, I think it’s safe to say that Branagh has got so many of the key Thor elements in place. Asgard looks majestic, while Anthony Hopkins’ Odin bellows with suitable bluster. Hemsworth, who you likely remember best as Kirk’s ill-fated father in J.J. Abrams 2009 Star Trek, looks and feels the part of Thor. Fingers crossed, but I think the Shakespearean Branagh is the perfect choice to bring the colloquial Asgardian to the big screen. We’ll find out when the movie hits theater May 6th.
