Scotty G’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up

I get to brag this weekend, as I correctly predicted the top 5 movies in order, and the most I was off in any of the predictions was $4.3 million, so that’s not too shabby.

Angels and Demons opened at #1 with a gross of $48 million [I predicted $46 million]. Suffering the lowest opening weekend for a number 1 film in the summer season, Sony has to be a little disappointed with the number. It did have the largest per theatre average with $13,609, the largest of any of the major releases this weekend. The big question will be holding power, so this upcoming week will be an important one for the film. Angels and Demons will have to contend with Terminator: Salvation and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, but I don’t see too much direct competition, because Angels and Demons targets an older crowd. I find it funny that I even consider $48 million a sub par opening, but it shows how times have changed.

Showing a remarkable hold, Star Trek fell by 42.8% to gross $43 million [I predicted $39.1 million]. This is absolutely incredible for a big budget summer film to drop by less than 45% in its second weekend. Paramount did a great job marketing the film to bring in the initial crowd, and because J.J. Abrams did such a great job making a quality film, the word of mouth campaign has kicked in and people are continuing to see it. Its total gross is at $147 million, only $4 million behind the total gross of Wolverine. At some point this week, it will be the highest grossing film of the summer [so far].

Speaking of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the film had a decent hold this week, dropping only 44% to $14.8 million [I predicted a gross of $10.5 million, and this was the film where my prediction was off the most by]. Its total gross stands at $151 million, and it is beginning to fade out. This might be its last weekend in the top 5 [that has to hurt a little bit that it may only in the top 5 for 3 weeks].

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past continues to be strong counter-programming appealing to the date crowd. It dropped 33.1% to gross $6.8 million [I predicted $6.6 million]. Its total gross stands at $40 million. Although the total gross is not huge, the film is playing a little less than the range of where Matthew McConaughey date films usually play. Fool’s Gold grossed $70 million and Failure to Launch grossed $88 million. So there are some positives and some negatives.

Obsessed makes its last appearance in the top 5 this weekend down 30.6% for a weekend gross of $4.5 million [I predicted $3.9 million]. Its total gross stands at $62 million, and with a budget of $20 million, everyone involved has to be happy how the film has performed.

So to recap,

Here were my predictions:

1) Angels and Demons – $46 million
2) Star Trek – $39.1 million
3) X-Men Origins: Wolverine – $10.5 million
4) Ghosts of Girlfriends Past – $6.6 million
5) Obsessed – $3.9 million

And here are the actual numbers:

1) Angels and Demons – $48 million
2) Star Trek – $43 million
3) X-Men Origins: Wolverine – $14.8 million
4) Ghosts of Girlfriends Past – $6.8 million
5) Obsessed – $4.5 million

The next major films to come out are Terminator: Salvation, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, and Dance Flick.

Until Next Week!
