Figure Friday: Mattel Expands its DC Universe

New York Comic Con kicked off yesterday, and Mattel celebrated by teasing its collector-friendly DC action figure lines. Mattel’s Joseph Perez and Steve Ozer opened the booth to fans by revealing that there would be two additional lines available in Spring 2027: DC Legacy Collection and DC Ultimate Edition.

The DC Premiere line of 6.5-inch basic/core figures has been on shelves for a few months now, and they’ve been earning glowing reviews from collectors. At less than $15 US, they aren’t skimping much on quality, and the articulation is better than expected. With the addition of DC Legacy and DC Ultimate, Mattel is essentially running the same playbook with DC that they’re running with WWE: three main lines of figures at three different price points.

With the promise of a full reveal of the Spring offerings on January 1, 2027, Mattel showed “the tip of the iceberg” of what’s to come. There were prototypes highlighting some of the articulation, as well as some unpainted accessories showing the loadouts for each price point. As of press time, I couldn’t find any images of the Ultimate Edition figures, but there were a number of Legacy Collection figures on display that found their way to socials.

Legacy Collection figures on display included Earth 2 Superman, Black Suit Superman, Black Lightning, Wonder Woman, Hal Jordan and John Stewart Green Lanterns, Absolute Batman and Catwoman and Build-a-Figures of Mongul and Absolute Bane. All figures appeared to have wired capes and multiple heads and hands. If this is what the Legacy Collection has to offer, I’m extremely excited to see how much they could pack into an Ultimate Edition Absolute Batman.

If you weren’t able to make the trip to NYCC to check out the booth, you can still celebrate the debut of the Legacy Collection by ordering the first figure on Mattel Creations. Hush Batman is now available to preorder for a Spring delivery. While the $100 is a bit ridiculous for what should be a $ 30-ish figure, the diorama base with Bat Signal and fog effect is pretty nifty. The figure looks incredible, with musculature shading to pull out the details of the sculpt. It’s not clear if this figure is receiving a bit more paint application than the first figure in the line, but based on the rest of the Legacy Collection I’ve seen online, it doesn’t look like that shading is on the others that I’ve seen.
