Here’s the log line: Assassin G: A Heroine Reborn marks the modern rebirth of a beloved wuxia classic, created by the son of its original author, Los Angeles-based creator Payhuan Shiao. As the creator of Immortal’s Assassin G series, Payhuan now carries the legacy of his father Shiao Yi — a literary master whose work has inspired millions, and whose legacy is now continuing as the Shiao Yi Wuxia Library at UCLA.

Wuxia—a Chinese genre of chivalric martial-arts heroes bound by honor and justice—is having a moment as global audiences discover its distinct blend of action, philosophy, and visual spectacle through newly streaming dramas, games, and newly translated novels.

Shiao Yi’s creation Gan Shijiumei was one of China’s most iconic wuxia heroines — the tragic star of the 1970s novel of the same name, and the unforgettable 1996 TV series that became a generational touchstone in Asia which has received more than 1 billion views. Now, her legend is reborn, taken from ancient China, and set in the 1980s with Chinese American writer Jen Troy and Chinese Manhua artist He Tao.

In Assassin G: A Heroine Reborn, readers follow Margot Gan, codenamed Assassin G, is a veiled killer raised in the lethal Vermilion Pavilion and trained to dismantle the group casting the Jianghu under a fog of evil– the corrupt Seven Cultivations Alliance — one target at a time.

But when she crosses paths with JP Yin, heir to one of those corrupt families, an unexpected admiration sparks. Then something much more dangerous: love.

Unlike traditional good-versus-evil epics, Shiao Yi’s writing delved into the gray spaces of the human heart. Through the eyes of Gan Shijiumei (Assassin G), a killer torn between loyalty and love, and Yin Jianping (JP Yin), her sworn enemy, he revealed how hatred can consume—and how love can redeem—even those born into violence. Their tragedy wasn’t about villains or heroes; it was about people bound by fate and torn by impossible choices.

“Assassin G was my father’s story. Now it’s in my hands. And soon, it will be the world’s again.”
