We interrupt your regularly scheduled Figure Friday for some important BREAKING NEWS: By the time you read this fellow Figure Friday contributor Josh Wallen and myself will be busy expatriating packing for our trip to Toronto for FAN EXPO Canada!
Now, it’s been five long years since I last freaked the scene in Toronto and, in point of fact, it was supposed to be the beginning of a new golden age of me attending conventions. Just a scant few months after FAN EXPO I set my sights on C2E2 in Chicago at the end of February…2020.
I don’t have to rehash the last few years for you, there’s an entire archive of my stuff chronicling my gradually (or rapidly) deteriorating mental state. That said, I’m really looking forward to attending the Expo on Saturday and maybe even a little bit on Sunday.
FAN EXPO Canada was easily one of the best comic and comics adjacent conventions I’ve been to. While this may seem like dubious praise it was by far one of the best smelling conventions I’ve ever attended. Real ones will know what I’m talking about.
During my last outing I had been knocking about the convention floor all day on a Saturday and I knew that something was off. I couldn’t quite place it and chalked it up to being an American in Canada. The vibes are just different, man.
But the it hit me, or rather it, didn’t hit me…not once had I walked through any offensive odors in the six-plus hours I had been walking around. Like I mentioned above, this may seem like a weird thing to call out but damn if it didn’t make my con-going experience exponentially better.
Beyond that, I’m looking forward to seeing what’s out there on the convention floor. I’m always looking for good deals on trade paperbacks, original art, or maybe just finding a comic I haven’t seen before.
It’s also worth noting that after the con we’re going to what could quite possibly be the largest gathering of BBP writers ever. I’m either going to reinforce some friendships or burn some bridges.
