It’s Christmas…In March! While it’s true that each and every Figure Friday is like Christmas, this one is actually Christmas themed. Now let’s unwrap my present.

Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas has been an annual viewing tradition for my family for nearly its entire 45 year run, excluding the years before the advent of VHS/DVD/Streaming. It was one of my dad’s favourite holiday specials (neck and neck with A Garfield Christmas Special) and by extension it became one of mine.
I should probably point out that, while we share a surname, I am a legally distinct entity from The Jim Henson Company. I’ve gone pretty far back in the family tree and I haven’t been able to prove any relation…YET. But once I do, I’m brining back Farscape, baby!
On its face, Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas could appear to be a real drag of Christmas special about the plight of the working poor, but it’s actually so much more than that. It’s a Henson-fied retelling or The Gift of The Magi, which shows us that the holiday isn’t about giving gifts, it’s about being with the ones you love and appreciating what you have.
Going back to the 2022 holiday season, Plastic Meatball had opened preorders for the figure set of Emmet and Ma Otter and I was duty bound to order a set for myself. The looked amazing and they were impossible to pass up.

Originally airing December 4th, 1977 on the CBC, “Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas” would have its US Premiere the following year on HBO, quickly becoming a holiday favorite that continues to be a cherished family viewing tradition to this day.

My set arrived this week and I think I can safely say that these are “Henson Approved” (Andy, please ask our lawyers if I can get away with making that claim). I also wasn’t prepared for what absolute units these figures would be. Sure, the measurements are given in the above-mentioned text but actually having them in hand is something completely different. These are the titanic figures this Christmas special deserves. My only regret, and I use that term in the loosest possible sense, is that these were made to order so I won’t be able to buy more to give as gifts.
Plastic Meatball really produced a fantastic set of figures here; they’re immaculately sculpted and the accessories are just perfect. I’d also like to call out what a great job Plastic Meatball did communicating with the people who preordered the set throughout the production process. I was never at any time in the dark about the status of the production and the set was more than worth the wait. I’m really looking forward to seeing what this company does next.
