Around The Loop: Drew McIntyre Should Win the Elimination Chamber this Weekend

This Saturday sees WWE down under in Perth, Australia for Elimination Chamber, the last big Premium Live Event for the company before WrestleMania 40 in Philadelphia in April. While the company’s champions, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns, won’t be in action, the show will still set the stage for a challenger to Seth’s World Heavyweight Championship in the Men’s Elimination Chamber match.

While CM Punk was originally set behind the scenes to win the match and headline night one of WrestleMania against Rollins, his torn triceps during last month’s Royal Rumble led to changes, with the main beneficiary being Drew McIntyre.

As a truth-telling, antagonistic sort-of heel (it’s hard to disagree with many of his promos), Drew has been doing stellar work on the mic. He’s constantly verbally attacking Punk, rightfully laying claim to knocking him out of title contention. McIntyre begged Royal Rumble winner Cody Rhodes to pick Roman Reigns as his opponent at WrestleMania to finish his story, and even managed to be the first wrestler in WWE to pin Rhodes since Reigns did it at last year’s ‘Mania.

Along with being a ring general, Drew McIntyre has been all over social media the last few weeks, forwarding his character and storylines in an effective and engaging manner.

Heading into the Elimination Chamber, where he’ll have to contend with Kevin Owens, LA Knight, Bobby Lashley, Randy Orton, and Logan Paul to get that ‘Mania championship match against Rollins. While all of the competitors would be worthy opponents for the World Heavyweight Championship, McIntyre may be the most deserving. His moment to shine back at WrestleMania 36 when he defeated Brock Lesnar was impacted by COVID-19 and achieved in an empty arena. Headlining WrestleMania 40 in front of a stadium full of fans would certainly be a nice redo for McIntyre. And with his contract up in just a few months, main-eventing the biggest show of the year would be a nice incentive to stick around.

WWE’s Elimination Chamber airs tomorrow at 5 am ET from Perth, Australia on Peacock in the US and Sportsnet+ in Canada.
