As always, if you dig what you hear, be sure to stream and follow the artists.
OFF! – You may have missed it, but last month, punk supergroup OFF! released the eight-song FLSD EP as an exclusive for Record Store Day via Fat Possum. The EP largely serves as a companion piece to last year’s highly regarded album FREE LSD. Featuring members of Circle Jerks, Thundercat, and …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, the musicianship on FLSD EP is top-notch as they oscillate between raw punk and more freeform jazz. As part of this new release, the band also released their new single “Keep Your Mouth Shut,” a blistering blast of hardcore. The music video for “Keep Your Mouth Shut” features footage from the band’s FREE LSD feature film. Directed by OFF!’s Dimitri Coats and featuring a veritable who’s who of punk luminaries, the punk sci-fi film premiered this past January at the 29th Slamdance Film Festival. If you’re in the Toronto area, you can catch OFF! playing live this Tuesday at Lee’s Palace. We’ll be there! Stay tuned to What’s Going On for a review of the show.

David Bowie – David Bowie’s legacy continues to loom large and now we’ve got a hot new remix of one of his classic songs. Released in late 1975, “Golden Years” was the leadoff single for Bowie’s widely beloved 10th studio album Station To Station. Now its been remixed by cutting edge DJ-producer TOKiMONSTA as part of a trio of new reimagining of David Bowie’s hits for Peloton. Speaking on what David Bowie means to her, TOKiMONSTA says: “To me, I connect with Bowie as an amazing innovator. He was always reinventing himself and pushing the envelope of music, while somehow never ceasing to be authentically himself. His experimental fashion choices are always a beacon for me to challenge my style and look.”

Remi Wolf – Bay Area indie popstar Remi Wolf is out now with “Prescription,” her first new single of 2023. “Prescription” was co-produced by Remi Wolf along with Solomonophonic & Knox Fortune. From the hazy psychedelic pop feel with major funk vibes to Remi Wolf’s Prince-esque vocal delivery, it definitely feels like the purple one was channeled on this track. The song was born from a conversation with rapper and filmmaker Boots Riley. Explaining more, Remi Wolf says: “A few months ago, Boots Riley called me and we spoke about his new tv show I’m a Virgo. 24 hours later – this song was created inspired by that conversation and it is being featured in the tv show out this summer. I loved it so much that I wanted to release it and share it with you all as a special little something.”

girlfriends – Pop-punk duo girlfriends just dropped their Over My Dead Body EP via Big Noise. Travis Mills and Nick Gross have amassed a following of half a million listeners thanks to their infectious sound. The new 5 track EP delivers more of what audiences have come to love from girlfriends. Relentless beats, fierce guitars, big hooks, raw emotional catharsis but also a wicked tongue-in-cheek sense of humor. Standout tracks include the singles “Life’s A Brittany” and “Over My Dead Body” as well as the nostalgic instant earworm “Thanks Anyways.” You can catch girlfriends on the road this summer in North America ,as they’ll be touring with Pierce The Veil and The Used on the Creative Control Tour.

Skating Polly – Tacoma-based punk band Skating Polly just put out their new single “I’m Sorry For Always Apologizing,” the latest release from the band’s forthcoming album Chaos County Line due out on June 23rd via El Camino Media. Don’t let the song’s upbeat feel or Kelli Mayo’s sweet vocal delivery fool you, the song’s lyrical content gets real. Speaking on what “I’m Sorry For Always Apologizing” is all about, the band’s Kelli Mayo states: “This song has some of my favourite lyrics on the record. It was originally inspired by my very real habit of over apologizing, then the concept came to me to write it from a perspective of constantly hurting someone you’re wildly in love with, which is a feeling I unfortunately know all too well.”
