What’s Going On: Greta Van Fleet, NAV, NF, Jeanick Fournier, The Blackmordia

In this week’s instalment of What’s Going On, we’ve got so much good stuff for you. Hometown hero NAV is in town this coming week. Plus, the latest releases from Greta Van Fleet, NF, Jeanick Fournier, and The Blackmordia. As always, if you dig what you hear, be sure to stream and follow the artists.

Greta Van Fleet – Much to the chagrin of angry old fist-shaking music snobs, Grammy-winning rockers Greta Van Fleet are back! Their third studio album Starcatcher is due out on July 21st via Lava/Republic Records/Universal Music Canada. The boys from Frankenmuth, Michigan have dropped the album’s epic lead single “Meeting The Master.” Written by the band and produced with Dave Cobb, “Meeting The Master” tones down the bombast and amps up the psychedelia and storytelling. What’s “Meeting The Master” all about? According to the band: “‘Meeting The Master’ peers into an esoteric world heeded by the word of a wise teacher. Sung in the voice of a devout believer, and eventual group exclamation, the song details the love these fervent followers have for their teacher and their firm belief in his vision. It’s an exotic spiritual journey. A dark comedy that inevitably ends in chaos.” There’s never a dull moment with Greta Van Fleet!

NAV – Chart-topping Canadian artist NAV is kicking off this next chapter of his career with “Lately,” his first new song since the release of his Demon’s Protected By Angels album last year. On “Lately,” NAV vacillates between being vulnerable and cocky, telling his lover that she needs to let him do his thing because of his superstar status and the lifestyle he affords her. The singer born as Navraj Singh Goraya’s smooth vocal delivery over the track’s trap drums keeps it a compelling listen. Toronto-based NAV fans are in luck as his NEVER SLEEP ‘23 TOUR touches down in town on April 11th at Scotiabank Arena with special guest Bryson Tiller. With both NAV and Bryson Tiller on the bill, you know the vibes are going to be immaculate.

NF – Michigan rapper NF is out now with his highly anticipated album HOPE (NF Real Music/Virgin Music/Universal Music Canada). The quick-witted MC has gained a rabid and almost motivational speaker-esque following with his brand of introspective and relatable hip-hop. HOPE will only keep that momentum going, thanks to NF getting more vulnerable than before. He tackles everything from wanting to be happy and analyzing his place in the industry. Plus, he’s not alone. Julia Michaels (“Gone”) and Cordae (“Careful”) both appear on the project. Accompanying the album’s release is the powerful new video for the poignant standout track “Happy.” NF kicks off his massive 47-date HOPE TOUR on July 12th with several dates across Canada from August 23rd to September 3rd.

Jeanick Fournier – If you’re a viewer of Canada’s Got Talent, you’ll recognize Jeanick Fournier as the winner of the show’s second season. The singer from Saguenay, Quebec is out now with “Dans la peau,” her first new single of 2023. Produced by Max-Antoine Gendron (Marie-Mai, Milk & Bone) and Aaron Paris (Drake, Kali Uchis, Rêve), the track is a soulful slice of disco-pop and serves as the first taste of what listeners can expect from the singer’s forthcoming French-language album. Speaking about “Dans la peau,” Jeanick Fournier states: “A beautiful gift that made me dance from the first chords. This song is full of sunshine but above all, it speaks to the electricity that occurs during a romantic encounter, the current that transcends and continues… Between you and me, it’s my own personal love story.”

The Blackmordia – French rockers The Blackmordia want to make you dance with their new single “54.” As the title suggests, it’s a disco-infused affair inspired by the legendary New York nightclub Studio 54. The sweat-soaked track shows that the band definitely isn’t just unafraid to play around with different genres, they excel at it. Explaining what “54” is all about, The Blackmordia drummer Sofianne Seddiki says: “This song is talking about wanting to be yourself. It’s about dressing the way you want, feeling sexy, taking drugs, having fun, being free sexually without caring about what others are thinking – In the same way people were living life in the Studio 54 era.”
