What’s Going On: Peach PRC, Kim Petras, M.A.G.S., Inhaler, Steve Aoki

In this week’s instalment of What’s Going On, we’ve got hot new releases to get February started off right. We’ve rounded up the latest tunes for you to enjoy from Peach PRC, Kim Petras, M.A.G.S., Inhaler, and Steve Aoki. As always, if you dig what you hear, be sure to stream and follow the artists.

Peach PRC – Mid-2000s pop is coming back around thanks to the new single from rising Australian pop singer-songwriter Peach PRC. “Perfect For You” pays homage to socialite Paris Hilton’s 2006 hit “Stars Are Blind.” With a playful and airy vibe similar to that of the Paris Hilton original, “Perfect For You” has a very 2023 feel as it comes from a queer point of view, with Peach PRC singing about her feelings for a girl. The single serves as the latest taste of what’s to come from Peach PRC’s forthcoming new EP Manic Dream Pixie, due out on April 28.

Talking about how “Perfect For You” came to be, Peach PRC explains: “I wrote this song in one night and thought nobody would ever hear it. I was crushing so hard on this girl, and we hadn’t even kissed when I wrote the song, so the longing in those lyrics is straight up how I was feeling. There was a night we laid on the grass looking up at the sky and listened to “Stars Are Blind” by Paris Hilton with one earphone each. I remember being excited and making TikTok videos to “Stars Are Blind” because the song had always meant so much to me. It’s just an amazing full circle moment to have Paris Hilton’s blessing on the single.”

Kim Petras – Fresh off of making history with Sam Smith’s “Unholy” and becoming the first openly trans solo artist to hit the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and receive a Grammy nomination in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Kim Petras is out now with “brrr.” As the song title entails, “brrr” is a slick hyperpop affair with shimmering ice-cold synths produced by ILYA. The mechanical industrial beat mixed with Kim’s bad bitch delivery ensures that this will go on to be an anthem. “brrr” is already catching on as Kim Petras delivered her debut live performance of the single recently on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

M.A.G.S. – Indie rock sensation M.A.G.S. recently signed to Smartpunk Records and is kicking off this new chapter of his career with his surreal new single “Elephant.” The brainchild of M.A.G.S. (Elliott Douglas) and producer Jay Mass, “Elephant” is an imaginative wild ride that’s unlike anything that’s out right now ,with its fierce guitar solos, catchy melody and chaotic lyrics. What’s “Elephant” all about? M.A.G.S. says: “‘Elephant’ is really about staying true to yourself and trusting your gut. I’m ADHD as fuck so my attention rarely stays in one place for more than a few moments, distractions can take me off my path if I’m not mindful. In a lot of ways, ‘Elephant’ represents a peek inside my mind at any given time.”

Inhaler – Irish rockers Inhaler are dropping their much-anticipated sophomore album Cuts & Bruises on Feb 17th. The band has released their new single “If You’re Gonna Break My Heart”, giving fans yet another taste of what they can expect from the project. The new track further displays the band’s versatility, showing that they can tackle a roots rock sound. Talking about what inspired “If You’re Gonna Break My Heart”, Inhaler states: “Whilst on tour in America last year we were listening to a lot of music by some of the great American writers such as Bob Dylan, The Band, Bruce Springsteen etc. Listening to these artists while travelling on big open highways resonated with us and helped shape this song into making us sound more like a live band than we had before.”

Steve Aoki – Superstar DJ and producer Steve Aoki is back with another hot collaboration. This time, he teamed up with Latin pop boy band CNCO for “Diferente.” The upbeat Latin pop track also has a dreamy wistfulness thanks to Aoki’s expert production. CNCO sound in top form, bringing the harmonies and emotion needed to take “Diferente” to the next level. Speaking about CNCO, Steve Aoki says: “I have been wanting to work with the guys for a long time now and our schedules would not coincide to get something in, so I’m excited to finally have gotten to do it. I love their style and so much talent with these guys. We had so much fun putting this one together and it’s just a vibe!”
