Trailer Time: Ari Aster Returns With the Trippy “Beau Is Afraid”

Ari Aster, director of Hereditary and Midsommar, is back with… something? The first full-length trailer for his new film, Beau Is Afraid, promises a story about a man (Joaquin Phoenix) trying to get home to see his mother. The trailer, however, shows nothing that simple. Time-shifting, hostage-taking, animation, and machine-fun fire make up this preview, all set to the soothing sounds of Supertramp. See for yourself. There’s a high level of weirdness here, but you’ll have to decide for yourself if it looks like brilliance or self-indulgent insanity.

Beau Is Afraid is slated for theatrical release April 21.
