31 Days of Horror 2022 – The Week in Horror: ‘Azrael’, ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’, ‘Slash/Back’, + more!

As Spookoween season kicks off here at BBP, I’m on my usual bullshit with the big horror news of the week. This week, we’ve got a new trailer for the Inuit-led horror Slash/Back, news about an exciting new Simon Barrett project, and the amazing new Netflix series from Guillermo Del Toro. Check it all out here! And if that’s not enough spookiness for you, check out all of our 31 Days of Horror content right here.

Ahead of her just-announced role in Scream 6, Samara Weaving is set to star in a new horror, penned by one of my favourite writers, Simon Barrett (You’re Next) called Azrael. Evan Katz (Haunting of Bly Manor) will direct, with filming kicking off this week in Estonia. We don’t have any plot details yet, but I love everything that’s happening here.

Inuit-led horror Slash/Back has a trailer this week to whet appetites for it’s release in theatres and on-demand on October 21. This looks a bit like a Nunavut-set Attack The Block which, if so, you can sign me up for that please.

In Slash/Back, “Set in Pangnirtung, Nunavut, a sleepy hamlet nestled in the majestic mountains of Baffin Island in the Arctic Ocean, SLASH/BACK opens as the village wakes up to a typical summer day. No School, no cool boys (well… except one), and 24-hour sunlight.  But for Maika and her ragtag friends, the usual summer is suddenly not in the cards when they discover an alien invasion threatening their hometown. These teenagers have been underestimated their whole lives but, using makeshift weapons and their horror movie knowledge, they show the aliens you don’t f*** with the girls from Pang.”

Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All has a new sweet-looking poster this week, ahead of the film’s release on November 23.

The cannibal romance starring Timothee Chalamet and Taylor Russell has been burning up the festival circuit, with stops in Venice and at Fantastic Fest in Austin.

Casting is coming together for Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu with Bill Skarsgard playing the eponymous vampire and Lily-Rose Depp attached as well.

In Eggers’ version of the story, “Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman (Depp) in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire (Skarsgard) who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him.”

My favourite trailer this week is for Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities series, which is coming soon to Netflix. It seems like almost every frame of this video had me going ‘holy shit, they’re in this?’

High hopes, I know, but with the incredible slate of directors (Jennifer Kent! Panos Cosmosatos! Vincenzo Natali!) and actors (Geena Davis! F. Murray Abraham! Crispin Glover!) attached to this particular cabinet, it might be one of my favourite anthologies ever. I can’t wait for this one to hit Netflix right before Halloween on October 25.
