In this week’s jam-packed edition of What’s Going On, we’ve got the latest new drops from Doechii, Robbie Williams, Priscilla Block, and YUNGBLUD. Plus, the return of The Killers! As always, if you dig what you hear, be sure to stream and follow the artists.
Doechii – One of 2022’s most promising rising stars Doechii dropped her first project for TDE, she / her / black bitch. The new EP is an exercise in the Tampa native’s versatility. Tracks like the charged-up “Swamp Bitches” with fellow rapper Rico Nasty showcase Doechii’s vicious rapid-fire flow, whereas songs like “Persuasive” with SZA and “Bitches Be” with Jst Ray allow her singing voice to shine. What’s up with the project’s provocative title? Doechii explains: “Many times I’ve been referred to as a “bitch” as a way to gaslight me out of certain spaces, something I think many people can relate to in one way or another. Lots of people will call you various names for doing something differently. So I decided to take ownership of the ‘black bitch’ and title my EP she/ her/ black bitch and reclaim that motherf***ing power. So if you’ve ever been put down for being yourself, just remember you’re powerful and unapologetic- these songs are for you.”

The Killers – Acclaimed rockers The Killers are out now with “boy”, their first release of new music since last year’s Pressure Machine. Throughout their career, the band has experimented with a variety of sounds and “boy” sees them return to stadium-ready rock. Produced by the band along with Stuart Price and Shawn Everett, “boy” is sure to be an anthem. You won’t have to wait long to experience it live as The Killers are kicking off their epic North American tour on August 19 in Vancouver at Rogers Arena. Explaining the meaning of “boy”, frontman Brandon Flowers says: “With “boy”, I want to reach out and tell myself – and my sons – to not overthink it. And to look for the “white arrows” in their lives. For me now, white arrows are my wife, children, my songs and the stage.”

Robbie Williams – Let him entertain you. Pop music survivor Robbie Williams has a new single “Lost” out now. The lush track with gorgeous strings and Williams’ impassioned vocals will feature on his forthcoming album XXV. Backed by Metropole Orkest in The Netherlands, XXV celebrates 25 years of Robbie Williams as a solo artist. What’s “Lost” all about? According to Robbie Williams: “‘Lost’ is about the times in my life when I’ve abandoned myself to reckless behaviour.” Both the standard and deluxe editions of XXV will include “Lost”, but the deluxe will also include three more original songs – “Disco Symphony”, “More Than This” and “The World and Her Mother.”

YUNGBLUD – British musician YUNGBLUD is out with his new single “The Emperor.” The frenetic-paced track sounds like it was tailor made for hard-hitting action thanks to its sudden burst of raucous energy. And if that isn’t already great news on its own, “The Emperor” was chosen as the official 2022 anthem for ESPN’s College Football Season. Speaking on the honor of having his song attached to ESPN’s college football coverage, YUNGBLUD says: “I wrote this song when I was seventeen, it was just an outburst of unfiltered energy that I knew would have its moment one day. I played it live for years but never found the right time to release it until now. College football is such a massive part of American culture and all I ever want to do is bring energy to people, so I can’t wait for the song to bring that energy to the fans and the players at the games all season.”

Priscilla Block – Rising country artist Priscilla Block just dropped “Off the Deep End”, a cheeky feel-good summer anthem. The upbeat track is all about living it up and getting wild. Who doesn’t love that? Speaking on “Off the Deep End”, Priscilla Block says: “We had such a blast creating ‘Off the Deep End.’ Hope this one gets you feeling a little wild whether it’s at the bar, at the pool, or you found your Boat Daddy for the summer! Life’s short – sometimes you gotta let your crazy side show! I’ll be right there with y’all, Off the Deep End!” If you like what you heard, Block is playing all over the place and you can even catch her this weekend at the Boots And Hearts Music Festival – the largest country music festival in Canada.
