From the House of Ideas: Take A Trip To The Wastelands With “Wastelanders: Wolverine”

Did you read Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s classic Old Man Logan series, which found an alternate universe Wolverine living in a world run by Hulks (plural) and the man himself had done some heinous actions to his X-friends? I’m guessing you did, as it was a huge hit, spawned several ongoing series’ and spinoffs, while also having a huge impact on Logan, the final film to star Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.

Recently, the world of Old Man Logan has been dubbed Wastelanders, and has become a series of ongoing podcasts, including Marvel’s Wastelanders: Star-Lord, Marvel’s Wastelanders: Hawkeye, and others.

This past week saw the Wastelanders brand come home to Marvel Comics with the publication of Wastelanders: Wolverine, a direct sequel to Millar and McNiven’s original series.

Written by Steven DeKnight and illustrated by Ibrahim Moustafa, this new book finds Logan wandering the wastelands, carrying with him the Baby Hulk he adopted at the end of the classic series. Throughout their journey, they come across new takes on familiar Marvel characters, including Ghost Riders and an assailant clad in adamantium armour. Telling more would be a spoiler, so I’ll leave it at that.

As someone who loves all the stories to come out of this universe (I highly recommend checking out the Old Man Hawkeye collection that came out last year), I absolutely enjoyed Wastelanders: Wolverine. DeKnight and Moustafa flesh out that universe, while also delivering a kick-ass, fun story with a character who’s the best at what does. This book is just the beginning, as there are Wastelanders tales from Hawkeye and Star-Lord set for release over the next few weeks. And, just to tie it all together, there’s also a new podcast, Wastelanders: Black Widow debuting on SiriusXM on January 10th, 2022 as well! You can hear your first taste of that below.
